Barnardos is one of the leading child protection charities in Australia, caring for more than 9,000 of the most severely disadvantaged children and young people in our community. For more than 130 years its goal has been to find real, permanent solutions for children in desperate need.
The history of Barnardos Australia dates back to the first migration of children from the UK in 1921. The organisation takes its values and direction from the work of its founder, Dr Thomas Barnardo, Irish philanthropist, founder and director of homes for poor children in 1870s London. Incorporated in 1995, Barnardos Australia still maintains its links to the Barnardos international family.
The statistics are chilling: More than 40,000 Australian children are in care - unable to live in the same house as their parents because it’s not safe for them. Every day there are more than 145 substantiated reports of child abuse and neglect and one child dies every 15 days in Australia as a direct result of abuse. Barnardos is committed to changing this.
